Buttermilk is a typical Breton dairy product. It is composed of pasteurised cow's milk added with selected lactic ferments, in a process similar to yoghurt-making. Paysan Breton continues to perpetuate this typical Breton expertise year after year, giving its Buttermilk a creamy, fresh, non-acidic taste. What's more, the Buttermilk production process transforms lactose into lactic acid, making it easier to digest than traditional cow's milk. It also has a high protein content.
Paysan Breton Buttermilk is made in Brittany, using milk collected from dairy farmers who belong to our cooperative brand. It is a high-quality milk that comes from Paysan Breton dairy farms located no more than 70 km from our production site in Lanfains.
According to Breton tradition, Buttermilk is enjoyed plain, often with crêpes and galettes. Those with a sweet tooth may wish to add a syrup such as strawberry, peach or other flavour.
Buttermilk is an extremely refreshing drink and is ideal in summer. When chilled, it makes the perfect addition to delicious smoothies and milkshakes. It can also be used in savoury recipes such as sauces and cold soups.
When heated, Buttermilk should not be brought to the boil. It should therefore be allowed to simmer gently or added to soups or cream soups, for example, at the very end of the process. It adds a sumptuous, creamy texture to any dish.
It is also perfect for making crêpe or waffle mixtures, as well as cakes and sweet pastries.
